Days 13–14: Coastal Elegance & Marine Wonders (Galle)

After a final hearty breakfast in Udawalawe, we’ll set off toward the historic seaside city of Galle. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, offering a beautiful transition from the inland scrub jungles to the palm-fringed Southern Expressway and scenic coastal roads.

Introducing Galle

Galle is a city where time seems to stand still. It is a stunning blend of colonial charm and coastal beauty, most famous for its UNESCO-protected Dutch Fort. Behind its massive granite ramparts, you’ll find a labyrinth of cobblestone streets lined with ochre-colored villas, chic boutiques, and fragrant spice markets. Beyond the history, Galle serves as a gateway to some of the island’s most vibrant marine life and golden beaches, making it a perfect retreat for both culture seekers and ocean lovers.

A Closer Look at Your Day

Day 13: River Safaris & The Historic Fort

  • Madu River Boat Safari: En route to Galle, we will stop at Balapitiya for a serene boat safari on the Madu River. You’ll glide through lush mangrove tunnels, visit a small island to see traditional cinnamon peeling, and perhaps even try a fun “fish therapy” session in the river!
  • Arrival & Check-in: Upon reaching Galle, we will check you into your hotel. Take a moment to refresh and enjoy the sea breeze.
  • Galle Dutch Fort Exploration: In the late afternoon, we’ll take a walking tour of the Dutch Fort. We will wander past the iconic Galle Lighthouse, the historic Dutch Reformed Church, and the Old Hospital complex.
  • Sunset on the Ramparts: Join the locals on the fort walls to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean—a truly magical experience.
  • Evening: Enjoy a relaxed dinner at one of the Fort’s many world-class restaurants or cafes.

Day 14: Giant of the Deep & Beachside Bliss

  • Mirissa Whale Watching Tour: We’ll start early this morning (with a packed breakfast) and head to nearby Mirissa. Boarding a comfortable vessel, we’ll head into the deep blue in search of the magnificent Blue Whale—the largest animal on earth. Keep your eyes peeled for acrobatic dolphins and sperm whales too!
  • Afternoon at Leisure: After returning from the ocean, the afternoon is yours for relaxing on the beach. Whether you choose the calm waters of Unawatuna or the sandy stretches of Hikkaduwa, it’s the perfect time for sunbathing or a refreshing dip.
  • Evening at the Hotel: Spend your final night in Galle reflecting on your journey, perhaps with a quiet walk along the shore as the stars come out.

These two days in Galle offer a beautiful harmony of adventure on the high seas and peaceful moments within ancient walls. We hope you find the coastal rhythm as rejuvenating as we do.
